You might be surprised to know that most people experience back pain. It’s the second most common reason for visits to the doctor's office. Low back pain affects over 50% of the adult population each year. For 10% of the population, frequent bouts of low back pain are the norm.
Why is the lower back so susceptible to pain?
The reason is due to the relative instability of this part of your spine. Unlike the thoracic spine, which is stabilized by your ribs this part of the spine is more like the neck. The advantage of the lower back’s instability is that it allows us to have superior mobility to reach down and grasp things on or near the ground. Once the lower back is out of adjustment, something as simple as feeding your pet can cause low back injury.
Pain and inflammation can be caused by the simple disruption in the normal movement or position of the vertebrae. Debilitating back pain can result from this subluxation. While the pain may feel severe this condition is very treatable. Soon after you begin treatment you are likely to experience a significant pain reduction.
Herniated discs can be a source of intense and debilitating back pain that can radiate to other parts of the body. Once a disc herniates it’s unlikely to heal completely. Fortunately deterioration can be halted by regular chiropractic care.
Sprains, Strains and Spasms
When you do little physical activity during the week and try to do everything on the weekend you may end up flat on your back in pain. Overworking the muscles or ligaments in your back can lead to small tears in the tissues that become painful, swollen and tight.
Stress triggers physical reaction in your body. Your blood pressure and heart rate increase. Your body is flooded with stress hormones while your muscles tighten. Chronic stress and tension cause your muscles to become sore, and weak. Back pain may result. It may be time to do some relaxation techniques such as deep breathing. Regular exercise will also be very helpful.
Treating Back Pain with Chiropractic
Adjusting vertebrae and pelvis to re-establish normal motion and position bones and joints properly is effective chiropractic treatment for back pain. Major studies have shown that chiropractic care is more effective, cheaper and has better long-term outcomes than any other treatment.
